Automatic delivery is not an automatic business
With an instant download, you attach a finished file before the listing goes live. Etsy handles buyer access after payment is confirmed. You do not need to email the same attachment for every order. Made-to-order work is different because you still create the buyer's file after purchase.
The product does not maintain itself. A download link can confuse a first-time buyer. A PDF can print at the wrong scale. A preview can leave someone expecting a physical item. Clear instructions reduce those problems, but you remain the person who resolves them.
In this guide, passive describes repeat delivery. It is not a tax classification, an investment recommendation, or a prediction of earnings.
Count the work on both sides of the sale
A small catalog can still require a lot of attention if every file needs an explanation. Before making twenty designs, finish one product and write down every step it takes to make that product usable.
| Work | Before launch | After launch |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Create original work and check supplied assets | Correct defects and keep your rights records |
| Buyer file | Export, open, and test the exact download | Investigate missing, corrupt, or incompatible files |
| Listing | Show the actual contents and explain the intended use | Fix wording when the same question keeps coming up |
| Shop | Set a price and understand the applicable charges | Review orders, expenses, messages, and policy changes |
Choose something you can make once and support well
A repeatable product has a fixed deliverable and a clear use. One original transparent PNG for a compatible design project is easier to describe than an unspecified collection of digital assets. A weekly planner can also be repeatable, but it needs its own layout, page-size, and print tests.
Personalization changes the workload. If every order needs a name, photo, proof, or revision, plan for that time rather than calling the order hands-off. A template also brings access, font, and editing questions that a flattened image does not.
Start with what you can test, not what a video says is profitable. Public search interest and another seller's review count do not tell you what your own product will earn.
Track what an order leaves after costs
The advertised price is not the amount you keep. Use Etsy's current fee policy and your payment-account statements to identify the charges that apply to your shop. Include the tools and assets you use to prepare the product, along with any advertising you choose to buy.
Keep your time in a separate column. A product with a small cash margin can be a poor use of time if each order needs a long exchange of messages. Record design time, listing preparation, and support time instead of assuming digital delivery makes them free.
Use this bookkeeping outline: actual sales receipts, minus applicable platform and payment charges, paid promotion, refunds, and attributable production costs. Then review your time separately. This is a way to organize your own records, not a profit estimate or a complete tax calculation.
Run a small test before building a catalog
Choose one buyer need, make one complete product, and keep the first release small. The useful result is evidence about your own listing and workload, including the possibility that nobody buys it.
- 01
Define the purchase
Write the exact file count, format, size, and intended use before making the artwork.
- 02
Test what you promise
Open the final package and test the software or print use you plan to name. Do not use a mockup as proof.
- 03
Set a review date
Record listing visits, orders, actual charges, and support time over a period you choose in advance. Keep paid and unpaid traffic separate.
- 04
Change one problem at a time
If people see the listing but do not open it, inspect the first image and wording. If they open it but do not buy, investigate fit, price, trust, and the offer. Small samples do not establish a cause.
Use Listsy for preparation, not an income promise
Listsy prepares transparent PNG artwork, a buyer ZIP, listing images, editable copy, and an Etsy draft. Its current PNG contract is a 3000 x 3000 RGBA file with 300 DPI metadata. That is a defined production workflow, not evidence that the item will sell.
You still choose the product direction, review the artwork, check rights, add any required AI disclosure, and decide whether the listing is ready. Listsy does not turn a PNG into an editable planner, create a tested multipage PDF, or remove customer-support work.
Etsy permits seller-prompted AI creations under its creativity rules and requires disclosure in the listing description. Keep that notice accurate. AI assistance does not give you rights to copied designs or protected characters.
