How to Make Digital Products to Sell on Etsy

A practical process for making an Etsy digital product, from buyer need and rights review to file QA, listing assets, and final draft review.

Short answer

To make a digital product for Etsy, define the buyer's task, choose the exact deliverable, confirm your rights, create and test the file, prepare accurate listing images and copy, then review the Etsy draft before publishing. Etsy's platform limits are only one part of the job. A file can meet the size limit and still fail because it is unclear, corrupt, misleading, or unsuitable for the buyer's intended use.

Start with
A buyer task and exact file deliverable.
Etsy rule
Digital work must be made or designed by the seller.
AI-created item
Disclose AI use in the listing description.
Final gate
Seller review before publication.
01

Write the product promise before opening a design tool

Write one sentence that names the buyer, the task, and the exact deliverable. “Funny dog art” is only a theme. “A printable weekly dog-care chart delivered as US Letter and A4 PDFs” is a product you can make, test, describe, and support.

Choose the format from the buyer's next step. A print-at-home planner may need PDF page sizes. A finished graphic with transparent areas may need PNG. A cutting-machine design may need clean SVG paths. An invitation the buyer must rewrite needs a genuinely editable template, not a flattened preview.

02

Confirm originality, source rights, and disclosure

Before creating the asset, list every input: seller-supplied images, links, fonts, logos, prompts, licensed elements, and seller direction. Record why you may use each one. A source being visible online is not a license.

Etsy includes original digital designs and seller-prompted AI creations in its designed-by-a-seller category. If AI helped create the item, Etsy requires disclosure in the listing description. That disclosure does not replace a rights review or make copied work acceptable.

  • Use original seller direction rather than a request to clone another product.
  • Remove third-party names, characters, logos, and copied phrases unless permission is documented.
  • Keep a record of licenses for supplied assets.
  • Add a plain AI disclosure when the product was created with AI.
  • Review the final output again because generation can introduce unintended protected elements.
03

Create the file, then test the file buyers will receive

Inspect the exported buyer file, not only the design canvas or preview. Open it in the software or workflow the buyer is likely to use. A PDF needs page and link checks; a PNG needs pixel and transparency checks; an SVG needs clean vector paths; an editable template needs working permissions and fonts.

Package only what the listing promises. Working files, prompts, contact sheets, QA proofs, and mockups do not belong in the buyer download unless you explicitly sell them. Open the finished ZIP in an empty folder and inspect every extracted file before attaching it to a listing.

  1. 01

    Inspect the exported file

Confirm that the extension, contents, page or canvas size, and editable features match the product promise.

  2. 02

    Test the buyer workflow

Open the file in the intended viewer, editor, printer, or machine software and complete the buyer's likely first task.

  3. 03

    Package the product

Include only the promised deliverables and instructions, with clear buyer-facing filenames.

  4. 04

    Test the package

Extract the ZIP into an empty folder, open every file again, and compare the contents with the listing claims.

04

Build presentation assets that tell the truth

The buyer file and the listing images have different jobs. The transparent PNG is the product. Listing images explain the product in Etsy's storefront. Etsy warns that transparent PNGs are not supported as listing media and that transparent regions can appear black, so place the design on an intentional non-transparent presentation background.

Use the gallery to answer buyer questions: what the design looks like, what is included, that no physical item ships, what the background transparency means, and how large the file is. A mockup can show a possible use, but it must not imply that the pictured shirt, sign, frame, or other physical object is included.

  • Keep the same design in every image.
  • Make the first image readable at thumbnail size.
  • Show the product with enough space for Etsy's crops.
  • Include one clear contents card.
  • Use the description to repeat the exact file facts in text.
05

Create the draft, read it back, and review it manually

After the files, gallery, and copy are ready, build the listing as a draft. An automated upload can confirm that the expected draft and attachments came back from Etsy, but it cannot choose the right category, price, rights position, disclosure, thumbnail, search terms, or shop settings for you.

Open the Etsy draft before publication. Read the title aloud, preview the first image in Etsy's crop, compare every format claim with the ZIP, check the AI disclosure, and download or inspect the attached file. Publishing is a separate seller action.

Listsy uses the phrase verified draft only for a technical readback of draft state and expected attachments. It does not mean Etsy reviewed or accepted the listing.

Next step

Build a PNG product through a checked pipeline

For a single transparent PNG product, Listsy can generate artwork options, prepare and check the PNG, build the ZIP and listing assets, and upload an Etsy draft. You choose the design and review the result.
