Start with the technical difference
PNG stores image samples in a fixed pixel grid. The W3C PNG specification defines it as a lossless, compressed image format and supports color types with alpha transparency. The image can reproduce detailed raster artwork, but its pixel dimensions set a practical scaling limit.
SVG is an XML-based language for two-dimensional vector graphics. Vector shapes can render at different sizes without the quality loss that comes from enlarging a bitmap. An SVG may also contain text, styling, and other structured elements, which creates different editing and compatibility questions.

Choose the format from the buyer's next step
Use PNG when the buyer needs finished transparent artwork at known pixel dimensions and does not need vector paths. Use SVG when the buyer's workflow depends on clean scalable shapes, editable paths, or vector-specific software. Ask the buyer-use question before creating the listing, because changing formats later may require rebuilding the design.
Do not describe a PNG as a cut file, vector, layered source, or editable template unless those properties actually exist. Do not assume an SVG works in every design or cutting tool. Compatibility depends on the file structure, software, fonts, clipping, masks, and other implementation details.

Read Etsy's attachment list literally
Etsy's current digital listing help page lists PNG and ZIP among its supported direct attachment types. It does not list SVG. Etsy's separate shop-image guidance does list SVG as a shop image type, which is a different rule for a different asset.
This distinction matters. A storefront image, a direct buyer attachment, and a file contained inside a ZIP are not the same thing. If a seller delivers an SVG inside a ZIP, the description should say that clearly and the archive should be tested. Do not claim that Etsy directly accepts SVG unless the current digital listing page changes.
- Check Etsy's buyer-file list before publication.
- Name the outer ZIP and every included format clearly.
- Tell buyers that the ZIP must be extracted.
- Do not infer buyer-tool compatibility from Etsy's acceptance of the ZIP container.
- Keep storefront image rules separate from download attachment rules.
Do not mistake tracing for a format switch
Changing a filename or embedding a PNG inside an SVG wrapper does not create a vector design. Automatic tracing estimates shapes from pixels. It can introduce extra nodes, merge small spaces, alter curves, change lettering, and lose texture. A traced result needs its own visual and technical QA.
If the product promise is true vector artwork, inspect the paths at high zoom, test scaling, confirm text treatment, remove hidden raster images, and open the file in the buyer's likely software. Listsy does not perform this work at launch and should never imply that its PNG is also an SVG.
Understand Listsy's PNG specification
Listsy produces one 3000 x 3000 px RGBA transparent PNG with 300 DPI metadata. At 300 pixels per inch, that pixel grid corresponds to a nominal 10 x 10 inch area. The calculation is not a guarantee for every printer, material, or production method.
The buyer file is packaged with a README inside one ZIP. Listsy checks dimensions, color mode, alpha, edge proofs, archive contents, and extracted-file integrity before draft upload. It prepares separate listing images because Etsy warns that transparent PNG can render black as storefront media. The seller reviews the final design, advertised use, rights, copy, and Etsy draft.
