Keep matching, ranking, and copy generation separate
Etsy describes search as query matching followed by ranking. Titles, tags, categories, attributes, and descriptions can help Etsy understand the listing, but ranking also considers other listing, shop, shopper, and marketplace signals. No title or tag checker controls that system.
Copy generation is a drafting method. It can organize product facts and candidate phrases. Keyword research is a separate evidence task, and a character-limit check is a separate technical task. Label each one accurately so sellers know what was measured.
| Task | What it can establish | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Product fact check | Copy agrees with the ZIP manifest | Buyer demand |
| Field validation | Title and tags fit Etsy's limits | Search ranking |
| Keyword research | Evidence from a named data source | Guaranteed future traffic |
| Seller review | Terms fit the intended buyer and product | Control over Etsy's ranking system |
Write a title that names the item once
Etsy allows up to 140 characters, but its April 2026 guidance says to consider fewer than 15 words. Put the item and its most important objective traits near the beginning. Move subjective language, gifting claims, price, shipping, and sale language out of the title.
A shorter title is not automatically better. The goal is a title that a buyer can scan and that accurately identifies the product. Do not remove an essential format or use detail only to hit a word count.
| Version | Example | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Repetitive | Floral PNG, Floral Digital Download, Floral Shirt Design, Floral Art PNG | Repeats the same nouns and mixes product identity with several uses |
| Clearer | Summer Floral Transparent PNG, 3000 x 3000 Digital Download | Names the design, format, dimensions, and digital delivery once |
| Misleading | Editable SVG Bundle for Shirts and Mugs | Wrong when the package contains one flattened PNG |
Use tags for distinct, relevant phrases
Etsy allows up to 13 tags and limits each one to 20 characters. Its guidance favors varied multi-word phrases that buyers might use. Use the most specific relevant category and accurate attributes as well, because tags are not the only matching fields.
A tag should describe this product, not an adjacent product you hope will bring traffic. Do not label a tag high-volume, low-competition, winning, or perfect without a named data source that actually measures the claimed marketplace behavior.
- Keep each tag at 20 characters or fewer.
- Use letters, numbers, and spaces; apostrophes and hyphens may appear inside a tag.
- Avoid duplicate singular and plural versions when another distinct phrase is available.
- Do not repeat the exact category or attribute phrase when a different relevant phrase adds coverage.
- Read all tags as a set and remove any that describe a file or use the buyer does not receive.
Make the description a product truth document
The first lines should tell the buyer what the item is and that it is a digital download. Follow with the exact package contents, file type, dimensions, transparency, delivery steps, exclusions, usage terms, and AI disclosure when required. Do not paste the title or a block of search phrases into the description.
For Listsy's launch product, every claim should reconcile with one ZIP manifest: one transparent PNG and one README. If the copy says SVG, editable, layered, font, template, physical item, or bundle, the validation should fail because the package does not contain those things.
| Description question | Answer for a Listsy launch product |
|---|---|
| What is it? | One transparent PNG digital design |
| What is delivered? | One ZIP containing one PNG and one README |
| What are the file facts? | 3000 x 3000 px, 300 DPI metadata, RGBA transparency |
| What is not included? | No physical item, SVG, editable source, font, template, or bundle |
| How is it downloaded? | Through Etsy in a browser or on a computer |
| Was AI used? | Add the required plain disclosure when applicable |
Know the boundary of Listsy's copy checks
Listsy can check that the title is no longer than 140 characters, that there are no more than 13 tags, and that each tag is no longer than 20 characters. It can also require digital-download language and reject unsupported physical-shipping, SVG, or bundle claims when they conflict with the package.
The current checks do not prove tag syntax, demand, competition, relevance, category, attributes, title quality, AI disclosure completeness, or ranking. Sellers should edit the draft, add their researched phrases, confirm the category and attributes, and read the final copy in Etsy before publication.
