The same pixels can occupy very different file sizes
We made the flower diagram below to test PNG export settings. It is a hand-authored demonstration, not artwork from a Listsy run or a customer listing. Both exports have a 3000 x 3000 canvas, four color channels, transparency, and 300 DPI metadata.
With PNG compression disabled, the file measured 36,061,352 bytes. With lossless compression set to level 9, it measured 119,161 bytes. We decoded both files and compared every byte of the pixel data. They matched. The optimized file kept the same dimensions, alpha channel, and density metadata.
This simple diagram has large repeated color areas, so compression works well. Detailed artwork or noisy textures may shrink far less. Use the result to understand the export setting, then measure your own file. Do not assume you will get the same reduction.

| Export | Bytes | Decoded pixels |
|---|---|---|
| No PNG compression | 36,061,352 | Same pixel data |
| Lossless compression level 9 | 119,161 | Same pixel data |
Check the rejected file, not the folder total
Read the upload error and identify the exact attachment. Your working folder's size does not tell you the size of the PNG or ZIP you selected. Check bytes in the file's properties if your operating system rounds the displayed megabytes.
Etsy's digital-listing help specifies up to five attachments with a 20 MB limit for each. Measure every attachment on its own. Several smaller files do not make one oversized attachment acceptable. Listsy's local checker uses a conservative 20,000,000-byte ceiling.
Look inside the ZIP before reducing image quality
Extract a copy of the archive into an empty folder. Sort the contents by size. Look for repeated exports, old versions, working documents, preview images, and private source references. Remove a file only if it is outside the purchase you promised.
Keep one clear final version of each buyer file. Rebuild the ZIP and extract that new archive as well. If the listing promises several designs or formats, removing one changes the product. Update the listing or find another packaging method before publication.
PNG already uses compression. Putting a PNG in a ZIP may save little space, and the archive has its own overhead. Measure the result instead of assuming the ZIP will be smaller.
Try a lossless export and check the result
Work from a copy and keep the original. Your image editor may offer lossless PNG optimization or a different compression setting. Those settings can reduce storage without changing decoded pixels. They cannot guarantee a useful reduction for every image.
Inspect the optimized PNG's dimensions, alpha channel, and visible edges. Some tools remove metadata, including DPI. Others reduce colors or flatten transparency. Those are different operations and need their own review.
Do not rename a PNG to JPG or remove its background transparency just to pass an upload check. A smaller file is only a solution if it still supplies the product you advertised.
Change dimensions only when the buyer can still use the file
Reducing pixel dimensions can reduce file size, but it also changes the artwork's usable resolution. A 3000-pixel side yields 10 inches at 300 pixels per inch. A 1500-pixel side yields five inches at that same density. Changing DPI metadata alone does not restore discarded pixels.
If the smaller file fits the intended use, check it at that size and update every dimension claim in the description, instructions, and listing images. If buyers need the original resolution, keep it and investigate packaging or export options instead.
Listsy's final buyer PNG has a 3000 x 3000 contract. Resizing it outside Listsy creates a different deliverable. It should not retain claims that refer to the original checked file.
Split a bundle only when the contents stay clear
For a multi-file purchase, separate complete files into smaller attachments within the platform's current allowance. Give each attachment a clear name and explain which files it contains. Do not split a single PNG into fragments buyers cannot open.
Listsy currently prepares one transparent PNG in its buyer ZIP. That is different from a multi-design bundle. Splitting a package will not fix a single PNG that is itself over the limit.
Avoid inventing an off-platform delivery promise to work around a failed upload. Any different fulfillment method needs a separate review of the buyer experience and current platform rules.
Test the exact attachment you will upload
Measure the final attachment again. Open or extract it in a clean folder. Check each file, its dimensions, transparency, instructions, and name. Read the listing alongside the package and correct anything that no longer matches.
If the file is within the stated allowance but the upload still fails, record the error and retry the same checked file through Etsy's normal interface. A network or browser error does not justify repeatedly reducing image quality. Contact Etsy support if the same valid attachment keeps failing.
